The Italian Cultural Institute in Copenhagen presents White, an ongoing photographic project by Stefano Amantini, which began in the winter of 2009, when the Dolomites were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
White explores the winter landscapes of the Dolomites, a breathtaking mountain range in northern Italy’s Trentino-Alto Adige region. In this area, heavy snowfalls create a sense of isolation, while also evoking a paradoxical feeling of both strength and fragility.
As journalist and author Paolo Paci explains in his introduction to the exhibition:
“The sense of strength comes from the snow-covered peaks, the ridgelines blanketed in white, and the vast forests where humans appear as mere specks in an immense space, their presence fading in the face of the majestic mountain landscape. Yet even small signs of modern civilization – like a pole visible through the mist or a pylon towering over the valley – highlight the landscape’s fragile nature. The tourism industry, which has tamed the mountains, has also introduced artificial elements: roads, ski resorts, lodges, and noisy crowds.”
The photographs capture scenes of miniature snow-covered fir trees, bare larches, and tiny skiers that seem almost like cardboard against a blanket of white. Cable railways appear as silhouettes against a gray sky, while massive rock walls dusted in snow emerge from the fog. These images present the Dolomites in their pristine white, as interpreted by Stefano Amantini. The result is a dreamlike vision that also provides a clear commentary on the contemporary mountain landscape: a world turned into a playground for adults but still retaining a quiet innocence that recalls childhood memories.
The photographs are part of the Tethys Gallery permanent collection, with a limited number of prints available for purchase in exclusive editions.
Stefano Amantini, an Italian photographer with a background in Anthropology, began his career in the late 1980s. After initially working on advertising campaigns, Amantini shifted his focus to travel photography, guided by his cultural studies and sensitivity to the diverse landscapes he explored. His breakthrough came in 1991 when he co-founded Atlantide, a photo agency dedicated to travel reporting, alongside Massimo Borchi and Guido Cozzi. His work for major magazines, combined with his personal travels, has led to an extensive archive that provides a unique perspective on the world today.
