Holstebro, a town in Western Jutland, lives up to its reputation as the wild west. Its Festuge, a festive week embracing diversity and culture, enables the inhabitants – along with 150 invited foreign actors, dancers, musicians and other artists – to reshape their town with more than 200 unusual, funny and thought-provoking events.

The Festuge’s dynamic involves different local milieus which come together establishing collaborations and realising innovative projects. The subsequent initiatives and situations are surprising and can be described both as organised performances and as unexpected stagings. Sports clubs, educational institutions, churches and their parishioners, ethnic and religious minorities, the army, the police and firemen, business and commercial associations, kindergartens, schools, hospitals and old people’s homes are the backbone of these nine days of celebration. More than a hundred different milieus participate in a host of interrelated activities within a theatrical framework created by Odin Teatret and the invited artists.

The Holstebro Festuge 2017 is a combination of three major cultural events:

Holstebro Festuge, a wide embracing cultural occurrence which since 1989 has been organised every three years by Odin Teatret, linking day and night in a continuous flow of activities brought about by institutions, associations, individuals, volunteers and culture-makers from Holstebro, its region and abroad. (www.odinteatret.dk).

Aarhus 2017, European Capital of Culture, which has included Holstebro Festuge in its programme and has thus provided the opportunity to invite two special protagonists: Théâtre du Centaure (France) and Teatro tascabile di Bergamo (Italy). (www.aarhus2017.dk).

Caravan Next, a large “Social Community Theatre” project supported by the European Union with Odin Teatret as the leading partner together with 13 other European theatres and cultural institutions. Over three years, the project will unfurl 30 major theatre events in various parts of Europe. Several partners of Caravan Next will be present at the Holstebro Festuge as active participants or observers, including ZID Theatre (Netherlands), TNT Atalaya (Spain), Teatr Brama (Poland). Some of the initiatives by Odin Teatret and Nordisk Teaterlaboratorium (NTL) during the Festuge:

When the Sea Came to Holstebro: Opening performance directed by Eugenio Barba with invited artists, local organisations and Teatro Potlach.

Fest Jutland: a performance based on barter and transactions, directed by Kai Bredholdt with Idom Village Laboratory, Teatro tascabile di Bergamo (Italy) and local groups.

Wildcards for Voters in the Wild West: A performance directed by Tage Larsen with Donald Kitt (Odin Teatret) with the participation of local groups in collaboration with Teatro dell’Albero (Italy), Teatr Brama (Poland), as well as international workshop participants, at the old Slaughterhouse.

Wild Cats and Wild Dogs: Theatrical interventions directed by Roberta Carreri.

Beauty Above All: The final shoots in the campaign for Mayor by Jeppe candidate for Kunstpartiet (The Art Party of Denmark). Mayor-in-Residence was originally created and directed by Giuseppe L. Bonifati (Italy) who is artist-in-residence at Nordisk Teaterlaboratorium together with Linda Sugataghy (Hungary) and Alberto Martinez Guinaldo (Spain).
