”Det er med stor ære, interesse og entusiasme, at jeg accepterede forslaget om at præsentere en serie af musikalske indslag på Det Italienske Kulturinstituts hjemmeside og sociale medier. I den forbindelse takker jeg direktør Raffaello Barbieri for at have tilbudt mig denne mulighed og involveret mig i et nyt stimulerende kulturelt initiativ. Igennem disse korte ugentlige indslag, der er præsenteret i videoformat, vil jeg med fornøjelse føre dig ved hånden gennem mit personlige musikalske univers, der fra tid til anden viser dig nogle uddrag af mine produktioner, ledsaget af en kort introduktion og angivelser af links, dokumenter og yderligere information til alle dem, der ønsker at uddybe deres viden yderligere. Jeg håber – særligt i den dramatiske, foruroligende og vanskelige tid, som verden gennemgår for tiden – at løfte stemningen og opmuntre gennem min musik, men også at fremmane nysgerrighed, videtrang (hvorfor ikke?) og de kreative evner, hæve ånden og styrke den vitale energi.

Paolo Russo, april 2020
Musiker og komponist Paolo Russo er født i Pescara i 1969 og har boet i København siden 1996. Han spiller klaver og bandoneon og er uddannet i Italien, Danmark og Argentina. Han er uddannet både i klassisk klaver (“L. D’Annunzio Conservatory” – Pescara, 1993) og i jazzpiano (“Det Rytmiske Musikkonservatorium” – København, 2002) og påbegyndte studiet af den diatoniske bandoneon relativt sent, i en alder af 32 år. Efter en lang række samarbejder med nogle af de største eksponenter for jazz- og popverdenen i Skandinavien og Italien (Etta Cameron, Caroline Henderson, Bo Stief, Stefano Bollani og Paolo Fresu, for blot at nævne nogle få), dedikerede han sig med stor intensitet og disciplin til at finde sin egne musikalske identitet som solist, komponist, producer og bandleder. Endvidere førte hans utrættelige og passionerede studie af bandoneonens lyd ham på 14 ture til Argentina, ikke kun for at studere med de bedste mestre i tango (Néstor Marconi først og fremmest), men også for at optræde med talrige sydamerikanske musikere og for at indspilde hele 3 albums. Han har optrådt i hele Europa, på Grønland, Færøerne, i Rusland, Storbritannien, Japan, Thailand, Mozambique, Tanzania, Algeriet, Brasilien, Argentina, Uruguay, USA og Cuba. Han har udgivet 16 albums som solist, komponist, band leader og co-leader, og to nye albums er planlagt til udgivelse i 2020. Han har akkompagneret eller deltaget som gæstesolist på over halvtreds albums af forskellige artister. Han har komponeret musik til mange slags ensembler – fra solister til symfoniorkestre. Han har komponeret og produceret musik til teater, film, tv og online-serier. Hans bog udgivet i 2017, “Bandoneon Solo Vol. II – ORIGINALS”, er defineret som et mesterværk af den berømte Néstor Marconi, der også har skrevet introduktionen.
Paolo Russo er internationalt anerkendt som èn af vor tids mest originale og produktive eksponenter for bandoneon jazz.

Further info about this episode: | • 3-movement bandoneon concerto (approx. duration: 24 minutes). Post-Piazzolla oriented work that presents also elements of classical, folk, jazz and film-music. The general idea is to transcend the limits imposed by the dominant tango tradition, in order to explore other musical paths and propose alternative scenarios, however without renouncing completely to its peculiar and characteristic language, where the bandoneon can find new life as solo instrument combined with a dialoguing and articulated use of the orchestra.
