The craft of making textiles (spinning, weaving) is one of the most ancient yet complex technologies in the history of mankind. Not much is left from textile production of ancient Mediterranean cultures in terms of material evidence (fabrics, looms). Yet, some traces of the fundamental social function played by ancient textile activity are available to researchers, and will be presented in this talk: archaeological evidence of weaving and spinning tools, the symbolic and metaphoric use of textile and clothing images in literature, the reconstruction and reflection on the technical process itself. Combining different disciplines, it is possible to draw the picture of a craft and its cultural and social importance.
