Prehistoric human migrations in Europe

Scientific seminar.

The first presences of humans in Europe left genetic footprints still visible today. When, Why and How the Continent we live in, hosting today almost 750 milion human beings, has started to be populated by our ancestors, is still the subject of intense scientific debates. The story of early human migration covers such an immense time span and area that it is almost impossible to cover all its parts and to reconstruct all the fragments of this huge puzzle, but recently, the field of genetics and the analysis of ancient DNA have offered the researchers the opportunity to discover more about characteristics, dimensions and motivations of a phenomenon that has accompanied the history of Humanity since the beginning until now: migration.

The event will be divided into three talks:

-1 Stefano Benazzi (Professor, Department of Cultural Heritage, University of Bologna):

The earliest migration of Homo sapiens in Europe and implications for Neanderthal extinction

-2 Frido Welker (Post.Doc., Natural History Museum of Denmark, University of Copenhagen, & Max-Planck-Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Leipzig, Germany):

Ancient hominin and human proteins: prospects for the identification and phylogeny of hominin fossils

-3 Morten E. Allentoft (Assistant professor, Centre for GeoGenetics, Natural History Museum of Denmark, University of Copenhagen):

Becoming European: a history of migrations written in DNA

Moderator: Enrico Cappellini (Associate Professor, EvoGenomics, Natural History Museum of Denmark)

At the end of the event there will be a buffet of Italian specialities and a glass of wine kindly offered to the attendees by The Italian Embassy in Denmark.

The event is free, but it is necessary to register to attend the conference before and no later than the 5th of November.
