Italians really do gesture more and in a different way

Foredrag på engelsk ved Maria Graziano, Lund University Humanities Lab.

It is a common idea that the type and the amount of gestures that people use when they talk depends on the culture they belong to. Italians are quite famous for this, and they are often described as not being able to talk without moving their hands, and even more so if they are from the South. In contrast, speakers from Northern European countries, like Swedes, are typically described as being less bodily engaged in conversation. In this talk, Maria Graziano will present her work on the comparison of gestural behavior in Italian and Swedish speakers. She will show some examples from her data and discuss the differences that emerge from her analysis.
